Thomas Affleck

Thomas Affleck was born in Aberdeen Scotland in 1745. He immigrated to America in 1763 and was most likely trained in his skill in England. He was very well known in his time and did works for many wealthy families including the Penns and the Caldwels. His style was mainly Chippendale, however there were various Philadelphia characteristics on some of his works.
This armchair was made for Gov. John Penn and his new wife in 1766. John Penn was the grandson of famous William Penn who founded Philadelphia.
These various pieces of furniture display styles from Chippendale such as the ball and claw feet and the bat wing brass handles, however the splat on the back of the chair to the bottom has a little more ornamentation and can be inspired from the Philadelphia style as well.
