Goddard & Townsend
And Thomas Affleck
By Lindsey Johnson
The ball and claw foot is original to Newport Rhode Island, and many people believe it is origninal to Goddard and Townsend, however there is no proof as to whether or not it is original to them.
The main difference about the ball and claw foot from Newport is the space that is hand carved between the talon and the ball. The craftmanship necessary for this is incredible, and it displays wonderous amounts of discipline and time spent.

The shell motif is original to Goddard and Townsend and it was completely hand carved. This motif was on a variety of furniture collections made by them including the highboy, secretary and other chests and drawer casegoods.

Marlbrorough Style Leg
This style of leg was striaght and usually had some sort of decoration or carving down it. Some were more ornate than others.
On this Thomas Affleck chair, we see the Marlbrorough leg and more decoration than above, but still the same block straight leg.
