1733-1809

Fourth son of Christopher and Patience

Apprentice of Christpher and his cabinet making

Known for straight-legged tables and the shell motif

Introduced the block-and-shell style original to Newport

Married Phila Feke, daughter of Robert Feke, a portrait painter

 

 

 

 

 

Thomas Affleck

1745-1795

18th Century Cabinetmaker

Quaker

Born in Aberdeen Scotland

Immigrant to Philadelphia in 1763

Loyalist in the Revolutionary War and was arrested and banished to Virginia for being noted as a "dangerous person" of the time period.

Married "out of meeting" to a woman named Isabella Gordon and had 6 children.

Known for the Marlbrorough Style leg

Most of his work was done in the Chippendale Style

First major commisions was for Governor John Penn and his new bride.

Governor John Penn was the grandson of Pennsylvania's founder William Penn.

All of these cabinetmakers from the 18th century are very well known in the furniture industry. All three display furniture with excellent craftmanship and are known for their works being in the Chippendale style, Queen Anne, or the Philadelphia style. These craftmans were not only amazing atrisans of their time, but also has interesting lives to go along with their works.
